Natural Beauties
Romania is a land still waiting to be discovered. The harmonious combination of high mountains, beautiful plains, lush forests, wild flower meadows, refreshing rivers or lakes and the Danube Delta represent the perfect destination, especially for those who look for untamed, wild landscapes…
The last unspoilt region in Europe, the Carpathian Mountains offer rich adventures for hikers, wild animal trekkers, bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, or even regular tourists who simply like to see old villages and step back in time to experience traditions that have been kept alive for more centuries.
BICAZ GORGES
The most spectacular rock formation in the country, the Bicaz Gorges offer the visitor breath-taking views in the narrow gorges with 300 m high rock faces. This is also one of the main passes in the eastern Carpathians connecting Transylvania in the West to the region of Moldavia in the East. Apart from being known as the highest gorges in the country, they also are the hiker's paradise, with well marked trails and magnificent experiences.
Next to the gorges there is the famous Red Lake, a beautiful oasis set in the middle of this peaceful landscape, which was formed in 1837 by a landslide forcing half of the mountain to collapse and block the stream below, thus giving birth to the most interesting lake in the region, with tree trunks still peering out of the water surface.
CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS
Home to the largest carnivores living in Europe, the Carpathians take up 30% of the country’s territory. They are set like a chain around the historic region of Transylvania, with the highest peak reaching 2544 m / 7600 ft (Moldoveanu Peak). The vegetation is lush and the forests roar with wild animals. Romania is home for the largest population of bear, wolf and lynx in Europe. Also, the beautiful meadows at the foothills of the mountains are covered in a multitude of wild flowers offering picturesque images with the high mountains as a background.
ST. ANNA LAKE
This is the only volcanic lake in Romania, with the purest tested water in Europe! It is situated in the volcanic cone of Ciumani Mt. in the eastern Carpathians, near Tusnad mountain resort. The access is either through the mountain on a hiking trail starting in Tusnad or by car on a pretty, winding road that takes you up offering great views over the mountains nearby. The lake is very popular especially in the summer, as it is located in a solemn, peacefullandscape, like a funnel, surrounded by the forest. The region around was declared a Nature Reserve but hikers and campers are welcome to spend the night in the camping anytime.
